5 Best Dominica Waterfalls

Waterfall flowing into the Emerald Pool in Dominica.

There is a reason that Dominica is known as the "Nature Island." As far as Caribbean holidays go, this destination is not particularly famous for its beaches, but instead is known for its lush rainforests, flowing rivers, and numerous waterfalls, which are often considered the highlight of any Caribbean cruise visit. If you're looking to experience Dominica's natural beauty, visit one of the following five Dominica waterfalls that are consistently rated amongst the country's best.

Trafalgar Falls

The side-by-side Dominica waterfalls known as Trafalgar Falls are truly a sight to behold. The larger of the two, known as "Father," is just over 60 metres high, while the smaller "Mother" falls comes in at just over 30 metres. Here, you have the option to swim in the cool waters beneath the falls or enjoy the natural hot springs nearby. Take advantage of an excursion to Trafalgar Falls, and you can reach the falls via a 10–15 minute walk along a footpath.

Emerald Pool

The Emerald Pool is just a 30-minute hike into Morne Trois Pitons National Park. The 12-metre high Dominica waterfall feeds a secluded emerald-green pool that is perfect for a quick dip. Thanks to the lush ferns, moss, and trees that envelop this treasured location, it's the perfect spot for nature photography. In fact, it was a backdrop in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Reserve an excursion to the Emerald Pool to experience this natural wonder and to swim at Champagne Reef — so named because the water bubbles from underwater vents.

Middleham Falls

Hidden deep within Morne Trois Pitons National Park, this Caribbean waterfall is over 60 metres tall and requires a bit of a trek through the rainforest to get to — you must climb roughly 183 metres up and over a ridge to reach this stunning spot. Along the way, you may spot an agouti (cousin of the guinea pig) or purple-throated hummingbirds, and you'll see the sprawling chataignier tree. Those who are able to make this 90-minute hike are rewarded with a pristine waterfall that is visited by very few travellers.

Hibiscus Falls

On the other end of the spectrum, Hibiscus Falls is a popular attraction in Dominica partially because it's quite easy to access for visitors of all skill levels. With almost no walking required to reach the waterfall's viewpoint, and just a few steps to reach the pool below the waterfall, travellers can experience one of Dominica's treasures without the hiking that is required for other viewing opportunities.

Take an excursion to see Hibiscus Falls, access views of the rainforest, taste local fruits, and visit botanical gardens to learn more about the vegetation on the island.

Sari Sari Falls

Sari Sari Falls is another majestic Dominica waterfall that requires an adventurous heart to reach. Visitors must make a 90-minute hike that crosses the Sari Sari River several times to reach the waterfall basin. Expect to get wet, as this trail requires wading through the river and climbing over large rocks in order to reach the final, stunning viewpoint.
