CruiseHealth™ FAQ: Sailings from the U.S. and Canada

Updated September 26, 2022

We're Ready to Welcome You on Board

We want to make sailing with Princess Cruises as easy, hassle-free and safe as possible.

We’ve recently updated our guidelines to eliminate testing for vaccinated guests on most voyages, with unvaccinated guests simply uploading a negative self-test taken within three days before boarding.

We also offer Enhanced Guidelines voyages that have their own Vaccination and Testing Requirements.

These new guidelines apply to itineraries from all departure ports except where government regulations and protocols may vary like Australia and New Zealand. We continue to work with our global health experts and will responsibly adjust our guidelines going forward as warranted.

Destinations have their own requirements, so please review the FAQ below, visit the Vaccine and Testing Requirements page, Princess communications and official government sites regarding your voyage.

We invite you to explore the world with Princess Cruises!

Vaccination & Testing Requirements

On September 26, Transport Canada announced that effective October 1 it is removing all COVID-19 requirements for cruise guests to enter the country, meaning that we are now able to welcome even more guests to sail on cruises visiting, arriving or departing from Canadian ports, including our Canada & New England voyages and Alaska cruises where Princess is #1. All our Alaska cruises feature Canada as part of the itinerary. In addition, Transport Canada has made it optional for visitors to upload their information into ArriveCAN app, thus providing a more seamless means for entering the country.

Princess welcomes everyone on board to enjoy our one-of-a-kind vacation experience. Below you’ll find important information regarding vaccination and testing guidelines to help you plan your next cruise: View the Vaccination & Testing Requirements by Region page.

Absolutely. Everyone is welcome to enjoy Princess’ one-of-a-kind vacation experience. On most voyages, unvaccinated guests, or those who do not provide proof of vaccination, simply must upload a photo of their negative self-test while they are in the process of getting OceanReady® (unvaccinated children under 5 years do not require pre-cruise testing). Guests should write their name and test date on a piece of paper, place the negative test on the paper, and take a photograph of this on a mobile device. Please be prepared to show the image if required.

Princess also offers Enhanced Guideline voyages that have their own testing requirements for unvaccinated guests, including providing proof of a supervised test taken within three days of embarkation (guests 5 and older). Guests will be contacted directly by an Ocean Navigator for assistance. View the list of Enhanced Guideline voyages.

These guidelines apply to itineraries from all departure points except where government regulations may vary like Australia and New Zealand.

Enhanced Guideline voyages encompass departures visiting a variety of destinations from various homeports and have their own specific guidelines. In certain circumstances, guests may undergo additional testing and wear masks on these voyages. Guests on Enhanced Guideline voyages must upload proof of a supervised test taken within three days of boarding while getting OceanReady®, as well as provide proof of their vaccination status.

Guests must be fully vaccinated and up to date which means you have received all the doses in an authorized or approved primary COVID-19 vaccine series at least 14 days prior to embarkation. Up to date means that a guest is fully vaccinated, and received at least 1 booster dose, if eligible before embarkation. Guests are considered "up to date" from the date of receiving their booster dose.

Guests will be contacted directly by an Ocean Navigator for assistance. View the list of Enhanced Guideline voyages.

It’s important to remember to bring all your documents so that there are no issues at embarkation and you’re able to sail.

For most voyages, guests simply upload their proof of vaccination into our MedallionClass app while getting OceanReady with no testing requirement. Guests must have received their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise. Boosters are highly recommended for those eligible.

On voyages where self-testing is accepted, guests must upload a photo of their negative self-test while they are in the process of getting OceanReady. Guests should write their name and test date on a piece of paper, place the negative test on the paper, and take a photograph of this on a mobile device. Please be prepared to show the image, if required.

Princess also offers Enhanced Guideline voyages that have their own vaccination and testing requirements for guests. Guests on these types of voyages will be contacted directly by an Ocean Navigator to assist.

You should also complete your health questionnaire using the MedallionClass app within 24 hours before you embark the ship. We’ll confirm your answers when you arrive at the port. The information provided on the health declaration will be subject to the  Princess Cruises Privacy Notice and shared only as needed with Princess personnel, third parties or local health authorities as part of screening and embarkation-related health protocols.

Guests are also required to bring all necessary travel documents, such as passports (with a minimum of six-months validity after your date of return), visas, proof of citizenship, re-entry permits or minor's permissions. Requirements may vary based on nationality and updated frequently. Other recommended sources for protocols are official websites and apps developed by government agencies and tourism ministries.

We’re working closely with health authorities to manage updates as policies evolve and will advise booked guests of any changes as they occur.

Fully vaccinated means that a guest received all the doses in an authorized or approved primary COVID-19 vaccine series at least 14 days prior to embarkation. Up to date means that a guest is fully vaccinated, and received at least 1 booster dose, if eligible before embarkation. Guests are considered "up to date" from the date of receiving their booster dose.

Before embarkation, guests must state through the MedallionClass® app that they will be vaccinated by the time they board and upload proof of vaccination while getting OceanReady®. Original proof of vaccination means an upload of vaccination card that clearly shows the guest’s name, which matches their photo ID, the dates vaccine doses were given (final dose must have been received at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise), and the name of the facility administering the vaccination. Alternative proof may be required if there are questions and concerns about the submitted proof of vaccination.

Remember to bring this information with you to the terminal to ensure you’re able to sail with us. The information you provide is subject to our Privacy Notice and shared only as needed with Princess personnel, third parties or local health authorities as part of embarkation-related health protocols.

We accept vaccines that are approved or authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the World Health Organization (WHO) or the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Some countries and regions on your itinerary may only accept vaccines approved by their regulatory agencies.

Given that most of our voyages do not require a test or simply require a self-test, we are not able to offer testing at or near the terminal.

Guests who test positive for COVID-19 within 7 days prior to boarding will not be allowed to sail and should not travel to the ship. Guests who recently contracted COVID-19 with symptoms may be permitted to sail if it’s been at least 7 full days since their last positive test and their symptoms are improving. These guests must also provide negative laboratory confirmed COVID-19 viral test before boarding the ship. Close contacts of confirmed cases can sail if they have no symptoms and agree to testing at embarkation and on board. Please see our COVID-19 Cancellation Policy.

Before You Sail

Yes, our crew members are vaccinated and received a booster dose in accordance with CDC guidelines.

We encourage all booked guests to purchase travel insurance before departure. For eligible guests, Princess Vacation Protection provides a broad range of benefits, including reimbursement for COVID-19-related expenses, subject to the plan terms. Guests can also purchase third-party travel insurance as well and should check with the provider for specific details on their coverage terms and policies.

Yes, we offer back-to-back bookings, subject to availability. Guests ages 5 and above on these sailings may be required to take a complimentary rapid antigen test before the second voyage – shipboard medical staff will notify guests of any testing requirements. Guests who test positive for COVID-19 may be required to disembark, and if so - will be entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit (FCC). We will closely monitor guidance from government and health authorities and will adapt and evolve this policy accordingly.

We welcome guests who use oxygen concentrators and those who are undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Unfortunately, we are unable to host guests who are dependent on supplemental oxygen tanks or are undergoing hemodialysis at this time. Our medical experts have determined that, for the guest’s own safety, this is the right decision. We remain optimistic that our approach on future sailings will become more flexible.

Please know that we’ve had to make some difficult decisions based on general public health guidelines and the overall health and safety of our guests. We did not take any of them lightly.

Embarkation

Guests should attempt to contact their vaccine clinic, their healthcare provider or their state health service to obtain digital copies of vaccine records. If there is no requirement to be fully vaccinated or up to date for their particular voyage, guests without proof of vaccination will be subject to guidelines for unvaccinated guests, including testing prior to embarkation at their own expense. If vaccines are required for a specific voyage, guests who do not produce proof of vaccination may not be able to sail. These guests who may be able to join the ship at another port on the itinerary if they produce proof of vaccination at subsequent ports. Any associated costs incurred for meeting up with the ship will be at their own expense.

Onboard Experience

Masks are recommended, but not required, in the majority of onboard venues, though you may need to wear them in select venues or certain situations. Mask requirements are clearly designated through signage and onboard communications.

We recommend guests wash or replace their mask daily and choose a good quality mask. Masks should have two or more layers, completely cover the nose and mouth, fit snuggly against the sides of the face and have a nose wire. We’ll provide complimentary surgical masks on board with replacements available upon request.

Additionally, when going ashore, guests should be prepared to follow all local health guidelines, the status of which will be shared before debarkation at the destination.

Health & Safety

Anyone reporting or exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms will be reviewed by the shipboard medical staff and tested. COVID-19 cases will be assessed and treated either in their stateroom or in a designated area of the medical center in a single occupancy ward.

Positive cases that do not require admission to the ship’s medical center, or medical disembarkation, will most likely be moved to a different stateroom for the duration of isolation.

If you, your family members, travel companions or other close contacts are quarantined or medically isolated during your voyage as a result of a positive COVID-19 test during your cruise or are suspected of having COVID-19, you are entitled to a 100% Future Cruise Credit for missed cruise days, including time in quarantine, for you, your travel party and any confirmed close contacts.

If you have purchased a travel protection plan through us, you and your travel companion may make a claim for a refund under the trip interruption benefit instead of receiving the FCC.

Yes, all ships have COVID-19 viral testing capabilities, including SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR, RT LAMP and antigen tests. Protocols for testing for SARS-CoV-2 are based on expert recommendations, including CDC testing guidance. Onboard COVID-19-related medical center testing and assessment is free of charge.

All Princess ships have a dedicated medical staff of doctors and nurses operating onboard medical centers to serve guests and crew. They are up to date on the latest COVID-19 scientific protocols and trained on all relevant COVID-19 procedures. We’ve also expanded onboard medical roles to include staff responsible for overseeing public health issues.

We’ve enhanced our shipboard medical capabilities with the necessary staffing, medications, supplies, oxygen, equipment and procedures to triage and treat multiple COVID-19 cases across the full clinical spectrum including intensive care.

The medical staff requirements and equipment on each ship meet or exceed the guidelines from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) Healthcare Guidelines for Cruise Ship Medical Facilities.

Where possible, we’ve increased outside air to the maximum practical level for each HVAC unit. HVAC units have been upgraded with F7 (MERV 13) filters, and some units also have the latest generation ultraviolet light (UVC/UVGI) treatment systems to facilitate high quality recirculated air where possible within design limitations.

The Medical Center has HEPA filtration and is maintained under negative pressure, which means the ventilation system removes more air than it allows into the room.

Shore Visits & Excursions

The ability for guests to go ashore in ports of call is controlled by the governments of the ports we visit, based on their specific protocols and requirements. When going ashore, guests should be prepared to follow all local health guidelines, the status of which will be shared before debarkation at the destination.  All guests are welcome to go ashore either by purchasing an excursion through Princess or touring independently.

Masks are recommended, but not required, while on shore excursions unless mandated by local authorities. When going ashore always carry your Medallion(R) device and proof of identification.

Additionally, please note that these measures are subject to change at any time. Therefore, we highly recommend you book shore excursions through Princess, as our teams are in contact with local officials who oversee health and safety standards for these tours.

After You Sail

On June 12, 2022, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the negative COVID-19 testing requirement for travelers returning to the U.S. We encourage guests to review their home country’s health authority and travel web sites for the latest guidance on testing and timing for return travel.
