Board your motorcoach and visit the Astoria Column before you cross New Youngs Bay Bridge to Fort Stevens, the only U.S. fortification in the contiguous 48 states to be attacked by a foreign power since the War of 1812. Once you arrive your guide will take you on a tour of the complex and its bunkers, abandoned gun batteries, and tower stations. Although Fort Stevens did not see action during the Civil War, it sustained an attack during World War II when a Japanese submarine fired 17 shells on Battery Russell. No damage was incurred, and the Army didn't return fire. Shortly after World War II, the fort was deactivated and the armaments were removed. Visit the museum to learn more about the fort before heading back to the ship.
