The charming seaside town of Soulac boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the Atlantic coast. But over 80 years ago, it was the site of one of the Nazis most impassable defense systems. Anticipating an Allied invasion from the sea, Hitler ordered the building of bunkers as part of the Atlantic Wall, a series of fortifications built to guard Europe's west coast. Many bunkers have fallen into the ocean or have been demolished over the years but in Soulac, a small and dedicated group has worked to restore these unique reminders of the horrors of WWII. From Le Verdon, you'll drive to the north of Soulac to a quiet stretch of beach. A representative of the group will lead you on a tour inside some of the bunkers and describe how they were built, their function and how they're being brought back to life.

Special Notes:

his tour involves walking on uneven grounds, gravel and sand pathways, sand dunes, inclined surfaces and steps in unilluminated conditions.
