Akaka Falls, Macadamia Nut Shop & Tropical Gardens

Your journey begins as you board your air-conditioned motorcoach for Akaka Falls. Travel north from Hilo along the scenic coastline, passing large farms and old sugar cane fields, en route to Akaka Falls. Upon arrival, take in the breathtaking falls that plunge 442 feet over a volcanic ledge, framed by lush rainforest. A one-mile circular stepped-path leads through the forest to the falls.

Next, you'll travel to Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm. During harvest a visit to the farm will show you how macadamia nuts are processed and packaged. Browse the gift store for souvenirs and macadamia products, and sample some free nuts or try the tasty ice cream at the snack bar.

Continue on to Pana'ewa Rainforest Gardens & Zoo. Enjoy the natural beauty, amazing colors and tranquility of your surroundings as you discover the only rainforest botanical garden and zoo in the United States. The planting efforts by volunteers is continuous and the grounds are considered a botanical garden. Here you will see over a 100 varieties of palms, orchids, clumping bamboo and tropical rhododendrons. Native and introduced flowering and fruit trees line the pathways as you stroll through the gardens, where you will have the opportunity to see birds and animals in this tropical setting.

After this scenic half-day adventure you'll head back to the ship.

Special Notes:

Macadamia nut processing is seasonal and does not take place on weekends and holidays; however, there will be a stop at Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Farm Welcome Center and Gift Shop.

Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a hat, rain jacket and umbrella in case of showers.
