For a deeply rewarding experience, no attraction offers more to entice the culture maven than the Korean Folk Village. Here you'll find over 260 traditional houses reminiscent of the late Chosun Dynasty, plus a vast array of lifestyle exhibits featuring working artisans, folk music, dance performances and more.
Think of it as the Williamsburg of South Korea where you can go to see a near perfect re-creation of traditional Korean life. The exhibition of various household goods and hand crafted items from pottery, baskets, paper, brassware, knotting, embroidery, musical instruments, furniture, and farming tools is endlessly fascinating. And a traditional marketplace offers the exotic flavors of Korean cuisine from various regions. The village began to form in the 1970s with about 30 folk villages being relocated to Yongin, a satellite city in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. Meticulously restored, the positive response spurred development and today the village is a world-class outdoor museum promoting Korean culture to domestic and international visitors. Today the village inhabits 243 acres, incorporates traditional houses, government houses, temples, schools, mills, bridges, gates and performances stages. Around 30,000 items of daily life have been collected from diverse regions and placed in the various buildings enabling visitors to enjoy an authentic cultural experience. A live performance of traditional folk dance and music enhances the feeling of being welcomed into a rare and exotic world and forges warm relationships with the big-hearted, industrious Korean people. A Museum Area that researches and studies the identity of the Korean people, and also exhibits, teaches and exchanges cultural heritage and folk documents plus a Family Park combine to draw old and young alike. And you'll find plenty of places to shop for fabulous souvenirs handcrafted on site.
Lunch at a typical Korean BBQ restaurant offers a culinary experience you won't soon forget. Otherwise known as "bulgogi", Korean BBQ started as a dish served during the Koguryo Kingdom sometime around 37BC to 668AD. At that time, it was called "maekjeok" and consisted mainly of cooked beef, garlic and chives topped with a generous amount of soy sauce. Losing favor when vegetarian Buddhists took over the country and appearing again after the Mongol invasion, the dish has grown in popularity evidenced by the Korean BBQ restaurants that have sprouted around the globe. It's no wonder! The spicy, salty flavors and the combination of textures and temperatures, not to mention the hands-on fun of wrapping your own individual BBQ sandwiches in a freshly made pancake or crisp lettuce leaves is irresistible. And deliciously marinated meats are delivered hot off the grill accompanied with authentic Korean condiments like the ubiquitous kimchi.
With the scenic roundtrip drive between Incheon and Yongin, you'll have ample opportunity to enjoy the expert narration of your experienced guide and to soak up the passing images of city and rural life on this intriguing full day excursion.
